Exotic paradises of odalisques and arabesques fill Modernist poetry. These paradises created by RubĂ©n DarĂo can be distinguished from the balconies of Casa MilĂ (La Pedrera) or Casa BatllĂł, GaudĂâs works of art. Yes, Barcelona is the capital of Modernist architecture and GaudĂ is its emblem because most of his work is to be found in this city. It is a rational city inasmuch as, behind its urban planning one can feel the spirit of efficiency and order that characterized the bourgeoisie of the early 20th century; streets thought out for strolling in oneâs best attire on a Sunday afternoon, sitting down at a cafĂ© before rounding up the evening at the Palau de la MĂșsica, the culminating work of Catalan Modernism which Lluis DomĂšnech i Montaner designed as a sanctuary for the renaissance of Catalan culture. Barcelona music lovers are also favoured with two other temples: the Auditorium and the Liceu, this latter of neo-baroque style and one of the largest opera houses in the whole of Europe.
