A soft, warm breeze wafts through the cobbled alleys of the Albaicín quarter and the wide, tree-lined avenues that run parallel to the low-lying land that follows the course of the River Genil. In summer, the proximity of Sierra Nevada alleviates the suffocating southern heat in a city which, in the early afternoon, sleeps the aromatic silence of the geraniums decorating the balconies. Granada is Paradise for highly sensitive people because its enchantment penetrates directly through every pore. The caliphs of old found here the fountain of pleasure that they themselves fostered with an architecture conceived for delighting the senses. The Alhambra, the most visited mediaeval monument in Spain, is a perfect example, a palace in which artistic beauty is equalled by the scenic surroundings in which it is set. If only for the Alhambra, Granada is not to be missed. But the city offers even more. The Albaicín, the oldest of its quarters, preserves the classical layout of the Arab medinas. Narrow, winding alleyways where so many stimuli for the senses can be found: the San Miguel Bajo square is the ideal place to relish in the local delicacies – cardos (thistles), remojón (fish cooked with oranges), pipirrana (finely chopped salad) – and good wine, close to the convent of Santa Isabel la Real. Christian Granada inhabits this and many other monuments: the Cathedral, Royal Chapel and the Cartuja monastery, living side by side with Moslem Granada: not far is the Alcaicería, the ancient souk, and the Madraza Palace. Few cities offer such a rich melting pot of cultures: Islam and Christianity have bestowed Granada over the centuries with beauty and harmony. Bell-towers, Mudejar façades, Moslem palaces… All comprise a singularly handsome and colourful image when viewed from the Alcazaba. In Granada, contemplating the landscape acquires the category of an artistic rite. |
