Pure Mediterranean. Two hundred kilometres of rugged coast (‘brava’ in Spanish), dotted with beaches of soft, fine sand and pine woods releasing that fresh scent which is so welcoming on those afternoons of persistent, burning sun. Sometimes, Man is capable of adapting to the environment and of respecting it to the extent of camouflaging himself in it; places like Rosas, Playa de Aro, Palamos or Lloret de Mar merge unobtrusively into the silent landscape of cliffs and glowing red sunsets. Wherever we go, the aroma of the sea and the woods envelops us, as it does the length of the Aro beach, where the coffee shops and fashionable boutiques look out for ever over the coast, in the fishing village of Sant Antoni de Calonge, in the restaurants marking out the beach close to Palafrugell, in Palamos, in the mediaeval castle of Sant Esteve de Mar and the Costa Brava Cau Museum.
The sharp, craggy horizons are what brilliant artist Dalí would see from his house on the Lligat harbour; a visit to the Dalí Museum in Figueras makes us wonder how he could divest himself of so much light and tranquility to submerge himself in a surrealist introspection, which strikes us as only being feasible from gloomy rooms in cold cities throughout long winters.
Because, this scenery needs to be enjoyed, letting one’s senses be filled, a motivation which seems to pulsate in the Hacienda El Bulli, the gastronomical temple officiated by the internationally famous Ferrán Adrià.
The Costa Brava is a celebration of sun and light, the serenity of unspoilt mediaeval architecture, as for example in the rambling alleys of Gerona’s Jewish quarter, its Arabian Baths at the end of the Archaeological esplanade or the hanging houses over the Oñar river, characteristic Mediterranean architecture to which colour and light has been added by architect Narcís Comadira.

El Celler de Can Roca:
The best restaurant in the city, and among the best restaurants in Europe. Founded in 1986, this restaurant offers highly evolved cooking that has blossomed from traditional roots. Superb decoration and the highest quality food. Magnificent.

Black Pottery:
Formerly very popular in the area. Today, its production is limited to Quart, a town that is 5 km from the city. Some businesses offer reproductions of the figures created by Fidel Aguilar, a Girona native Noucentist sculptor from the first quarter of the 20th century. Some of his works are placed in the city’s streets and gardens.

Handicrafts:
In Gerona, you can buy craft goods made by artisans who set up their stands every Saturday at the Pont de Pedra. Here you can find metalwork, made by some city artisans since the beginning of the 13th century, as well as painting, sculpture, photography, and other mediums by local artists.

Cap de Creus Natural Park:
Its extraordinary landscape stands out, along with the exceptional beauty of the coast contrasting with the inland area. It is a wonderful natural space, with a singular geological configuration, with structures and outcroppings that are unique in all the world. It is also the first natural sea-land park in Catalonia.

Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery:
The Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery has historically been considered a typical example of Romanesque building in Catalonia. Its origins date back to the 1st century CE. Legend has it that early Christians coming from Rome shipwrecked here and promised to build the monastery on this location as an offering to God. Christian doctrine claims Sant Pere de Rodes as one of the most significant monasteries. The first official mention of the monastery dates back to 878.

Cadaqués:
The world-famous "fishing village," with approximately 1900 year-round residents, proclaims itself to be the gem of the towns along the northern Costa Brava area. During the 1950s, tourism established itself here, as in many other coastal villages, but no other place of this size in the world has received as many famous artists as "Dalí’s village." Matisse, Picasso, Duchamps, Man Ray, Max Ernst, André Derain, just to name a few.

Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park:
This is the second-largest wetland area in Catalonia. It is made up of a group of flooding lakes and meadows where the Muga and Fluvià rivers come together. It is a very special habitat for wildlife, especially aquatic birds.

Empúries Archaeological Site:
L' Escala is the entryway into the extraordinary Ampúrias archaeological site, excavated since 1908, by the sea, with the remains of the ancient Greek colony of Emporion and the Roman city Emporiae. The site, covering 40 hectares, is the most frequently visited archaeological site in Catalonia. Part of the remains and a copy of the famous sculpture of Aesclepius can be seen in the Ampúrias Monographic Museum. The remains of a Paleo-Christian church (4th or 5th century) are also located here. The fortifications and the Sant Martí church are also of great interest.

Medes Islands:
The small archipelago of the Medes Islands (21.5 ha surface area), made up of seven little islands and a reef located barely one mile from the coast of the Montgrí massif, of which it forms a part geologically, is a place of extraordinary biological and ecological value, due to the variety of species and landscapes it contains. Of great scientific interest, it is framed in a very beautiful landscape, unique in Catalonia.
